Very Unusual Sunspot Could Be Hazardous
by Mitch Battros - ECM/ECTV
I received a notice late last night regarding a very unusual sunspot coming around the eastern limb of the Sun. At first I thought it might have been someone’s imagination getting the better part of them. Now I have received confirmation from NOAA/NASA Space Weather Center something indeed is occurring which could spell disaster if it was to form together.
New sunspot 927 has materialized and it is very unusual. Sunspot 927 is shaped like a ring. The ring is about twice as wide as Earth and should be seen with moderate size amateur scopes. The magnetic field of this sunspot is posed to cause unstable conditions leading to severe eruptions.
Astronomer Owen Bennedick is a 44 year veteran and has a special interest in solar activity. Mr. Bennedick has been using high-powered equipment at his Wappa Falls Observatory near Yandina to observe what could be the largest solar flare ever recorded. And he warns it could create worldwide havoc. He says that this sunspot could be 25 times the size of the Earth and it would make a nuclear bomb look like “a firecracker”.
He believes home appliances going on the blink, homing pigeons getting lost, communication systems failing and even widespread blackouts are likely because of a possible giant solar flare which could erupt and Earth directed.
“I fear we are going to get a repeat of Canada in 1979 when a giant solar flare took out the power grid of the entire eastern seaboard,” Mr Bennedick said.
“I would advise people to protect their electronic equipment from power surges and even to stay out of the sun.’’
