Rutgers, Penn State Astronomy Teams Discover Ancestors of Milky Way-Type Galaxies
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Astronomers at Rutgers and Penn State universities have discovered galaxies in the distant universe that are ancestors of spiral galaxies like our Milky Way.
The Violent Lives of Galaxies: Caught in the Cosmic Dark Matter Web
Astronomers are using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to dissect one of the largest structures in the universe as part of a quest to understand the violent lives of galaxies. Hubble is providing indirect evidence of unseen dark matter tugging on galaxies in the crowded, rough-and-tumble environment of a massive supercluster of hundreds of galaxies.
A Rare Quartet of Stars May Unlock Secrets of Stellar Evolution
Astronomers using telescopes on Mauna Kea have found an extremely rare quartet of stars that orbit each other within a region smaller than Jupiter's orbit round the Sun. The quartet appears as a speck of light even when viewed with the world's most powerful telescopes but its spectrum reveals not one, but four distinct stars arranged in two pairs. Astronomers are now struggling to work out whether they could have been born that way, or were forced together by a dense disk of gas in their youth.
Galaxy May Hold Hundreds Of Rogue Black Holes
When mid-sized black holes those with masses of a few thousands time that of the sun or globular clusters merge with smaller, star-sized black holes they can receive a velocity kick large enough to eject them from the cluster's gravitational grip.
Astronomers are First to Successfully Predict Extra-Solar Planet
Astronomers, including one at The University of Arizona, have successfully predicted the existence of an unknown planet, the first since Neptune was predicted in the 1840s. This planet, however, is outside our own solar system, circling a star a little more than 200 light years from Earth.
Earth: A Borderline Planet for Life?
Austin, TX - Our planet is changing before our eyes, and as a result, many species are living on the edge. Yet Earth has been on the edge of habitability from the beginning. New work by astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics shows that if Earth had been slightly smaller and less massive, it would not have plate tectonics - the forces that move continents and build mountains. And without plate tectonics, life might never have gained a foothold on our world.
SDSS Reveals Hidden Population of Powerful Black Holes
Powered by glowing, super-heated gas as it swirls into black holes a billion times more massive than the sun, quasars are the most brilliantly luminous objects in the universe. But a new study from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-II) shows that many of the most energetic quasars are hidden from our view by clouds of gas and dust that block the central black hole.
